The Naga Staircase

The Naga Staircase is a landmark architectural feature of Wat Mon Phaya Chae, serving as the pedestrian path from the lower temple area to the hilltop enshrining the Holy Relics. The staircase consists of a total of 585 steps, divided into three main sections. Flanked by elongated Naga (serpent) sculptures that follow the mountain’s incline, it symbolizes the Buddhist cosmology of a bridge connecting the earthly realm to heaven (the summit). The climb is surrounded by the lush deciduous and mixed forests of the Mon Phaya Chae National Park, offering a serene environment for meditation and nature appreciation before reaching the sacred stupa.
