Traditional bricklaying without plastering.

The traditional bricklaying technique without plastering seen on the Plong Liam chimney is a masterclass in early Rattanakosin craftsmanship, showcasing exposed red clay bricks meticulously stacked to form a perfect octagonal structure without the need for an external coating. The beauty of this architecture lies in the precision of joining the bricks with a very thin layer of ancient fermented mortar, allowing the natural texture and patterns of the 200-year-old terracotta to remain clearly visible. These exposed brick lines not only reflect the Western architectural influence during the reign of King Rama III but also demonstrate the remarkable durability of materials and the skill of past craftsmen who created a massive riverside structure that still stands tall against the elements along the Tha Chin River today.
