Wat Mahawan Wanaram / Wat Mahawan

Wat Mahawan is one of the four royal temples commissioned by Queen Jamadevi, the first ruler of Hariphunchai, around 1223 B.E. It is located to the west of the ancient city of Lamphun. The temple is nationally renowned as the discovery site of "Phra Rod" (Phra Rod Mahawan), the oldest baked-clay amulet in the prestigious Benjaphakhi set, dating back over 1,300 years. Legends attribute its creation to Rishi Narada to protect soldiers and citizens. The temple enshrines "Phra Rod Luang," an ancient stone Buddha image that served as the prototype for the famous amulets.
