Hariphunchai Stucco Connection: Wat Ku Ri to Wat Phra Chao Tan Jai

The area surrounding Wat Phra Chao Tan Jai in Lampang is archaeologically significant, believed to be part of Wiang Alamphang, a satellite city of the ancient Hariphunchai Kingdom. The discovery of Hariphunchai-style stucco Buddha fragments here connects stylistically with those found at Wat Ku Ri (Ku Ub) in Lamphun, representing the shared artistic heritage and religious expansion of the 11th-12th century. Notably, standing Buddha images of Hariphunchai origin were relocated from nearby ruins to Wat Phra Chao Tan Jai for preservation and veneration, symbolizing the enduring historical link between Hariphunchai (Lamphun) and Khelang Nakhon (Lampang) through distinctive stucco craftsmanship.
