The Chao Phor Pun Joeng Shrine enshrines the spirit of "Chao Phor Pun Joeng" (or Pun Choeng), a legendary warrior and master of ancient martial arts. Local lore identifies him as a distinguished general and teacher of boxing, swordsmanship, and "Fon Joeng" (traditional martial dance) for the army under King Anantayot, the first ruler of Khelang Nakhon (Lampang), during 688-749 CE. The name "Pun Joeng" translates to "sharing the art of Joeng" (combat skills). The shrine was built by the community of Wat Phra Chao Tan Jai as a mark of gratitude and remembrance of his heroism, symbolizing the high respect for teachers and warriors who defended the Lampang territory during the late Hariphunchai era.
