Ukai is a 1,300-year-old traditional fishing method. At night, masters (Usho) use lanterns to attract sweetfish (Ayu). Cormorants dive to catch them, but a special cord around their neck prevents them from swallowing larger fish. The birds return to the boat, and the Usho expertly retrieves the catch while rewarding the bird.
