In the wild, these birds are migratory, moving to warmer coastal areas during winter. However, the cormorants in Uji are residents. Captive breeding is now common, a breakthrough achieved in Uji, allowing them to live year-round in specialized aviaries near the river under human care, instead of migrating with wild flocks.
