“Home to the originalTrangCityPillar, over 200 years old, representing the earliest history of Trang’s settlement.”
Trang City Pillar Shrine is located along the old Trang–Kantang road in Khuan Thani Subdistrict, Kantang District, approximately 8 kilometers from Trang city center. In front of the shrine, visitors will find stalls offering worshipsets, flowers–incense–candles, and tricolorfabric for paying respects. The surroundings are peaceful, shady, and well-maintained.
Historically, Trang was one of the 12NaksatTowns under Nakhon Si Thammarat and served as an important western seaport. In 1811 (B.E. 2354), Phraya Nakhon (Noi), the governor of Nakhon Si Thammarat, appointed Luang Upha-yarajthani to govern Trang and established the city at Khuan Thani. It is believed that the first citypillar, made from wood and housed in a simple shrine, was erected during this period as the spiritual anchor of the town.
In 1893 (B.E. 2436), PhrayaRatsadanupraditMahisonPhakdi(Khawsimbi) relocated Trang’s administrative center to Kantang, yet the original City Pillar Shrine continued to be revered by locals. In 1961 (B.E. 2504), the province built a new concrete-pillared pavilion to replace the old structure.
Recognizing the shrine as an important historical monument, Trang Province initiated a major restoration in 1992 (B.E. 2535). A new citypillarpole was selected from a Golden Shower Tree (Ratchaphruek) at Ban Nong Sai School in Nayong District. The sacred tree-cutting ceremony took place on July 3, 1992. The pillar was later presented to His Majesty the King for anointment and holyblessing at Chitralada Villa on August 31, 1993. Additional land was purchased, and a new shrine building was constructed shortly after.
Upon completion, His Royal Highness the Crown Prince presided over the officialopeningceremony of the Trang City Pillar Shrine on April 8, 1995 (B.E. 2538). This marked a significant historical moment and reaffirmed the shrine’s role as a revered and culturally important site for the people of Trang.
