“ Explore nine stunning limestone cave chambers, discover World War II historical traces, and enjoy breathtaking views of the River Kwai and railway line. ”

Wat Tham Khao Pun is an ancient temple renowned for its unique combination of natural beauty, religious significance, and historical importance. Located on a hill beside the River Kwai Yai in Kanchanaburi Province, the site was originally a natural limestone mountain where large cave chambers were gradually formed over thousands of years through underground water erosion. Inside, the cave system consists of interconnected chambers totaling around nine rooms, each named according to its characteristics and spiritual beliefs, such as the Reclining Buddha Chamber, Divine Chamber, Crystal Chamber, and Chalk Chamber. One of the temple’s main highlights is the winding pathway through the caves, surrounded by magnificent natural stalactites and stalagmites. Some formations resemble stone curtains, pillars, or sparkling crystal-like surfaces reflecting the cave lighting. The temple has installed illuminated walkways and concrete paths to make exploration easier and safer while carefully preserving the cave’s natural environment. The temperature inside the cave is noticeably cooler and more humid than outside, creating a peaceful and mystical atmosphere.

Within the cave are numerous Buddha images, including meditation postures, Mara-Vijaya postures, and a large Reclining Buddha statue that serves as the spiritual centerpiece for local worshippers. Many visitors come to pay respect and seek blessings, believing that worshipping at all the sacred points inside the cave will bring prosperity, good fortune, and peace in life.Wat Tham Khao Pun also holds historical importance from World War II. During the war, the Japanese army used the caves as supply storage facilities, a field hospital, and a military resting point due to the temple’s strategic location near the Death Railway and the River Kwai. Some sections of the cave still preserve traces of wartime modifications, tunnels, and connecting passages once used during military operations, making the temple both a natural attraction and an educational historical site.

Another major attraction is the panoramic viewpoint behind the temple, offering spectacular scenery of the curved River Kwai Yai, especially during sunrise and sunset when the sunlight reflects beautifully on the water. Visitors can also clearly see the Thonburi–Nam Tok railway line and passing trains surrounded by mountains and rivers, making it one of the most popular photography spots for tourists and café lovers alike.Today, Wat Tham Khao Pun remains one of Kanchanaburi’s must-visit attractions, suitable for spiritual travelers, photographers, nature enthusiasts, and those interested in World War II history. The temple can be visited year-round, with the rainy and cool seasons offering especially lush scenery and refreshing weather.
