“A historical site that once housed a temporary pavilion built to welcome KingRamaVI, and the location of the remaining JapaneseMilitaryTunnel, along with a scenic viewpoint overlooking Kantang.”
KuanTummanakChan is a hill area with significant historical value in Kantang District and the Trang region. Originally, this modest hill was chosen as the site for constructing a temporaryroyalpavilion to welcome KingVajiravudh(RamaVI) during his royal visit to Trang and Kantang in 1915 (B.E.2458). This visit was an important historical moment, coinciding with the development of the Southern Railway and major infrastructure expansion in southern Thailand. As a result, KuanTummanakChan became a location deeply connected to national history and the era of transformation.
Over time, the temporary pavilion no longer remained, but the surrounding area of the hill was developed into a public park for relaxation. The park maintains its natural tranquility with shaded walking paths, improved stairways up the hill, and multiple resting points. This allows visitors to enjoy a blend of nature and history in one place.
One of the most notable features of the park is the ancientJapaneseMilitaryTunnel, built during World War II. It is believed that the tunnel served as a shelter and military observation point in southern Thailand at that time. The tunnel features a narrow passage carved into the hill, much of which has been preserved in its original condition. Lights and safe walking paths have been added, allowing visitors to explore the interior and learn about rare warhistory in this region.
At the upper part of the hill lies a viewpoint offering panoramic scenery of Kantang town and the winding TrangRiver. The gentle elevation makes it accessible for families, history enthusiasts, and those who enjoy peaceful natural surroundings.
With its combination of localhistory, WorldWarIIheritage, shady greenery, and scenic views, KuanTummanakChan stands out as a historical attraction that reflects Kantang’s story from past to present, making it a meaningful place to visit when exploring the district.
