“It is one of the few city pillar shrines in Thailand designed with Chinese architecture and serves as a symbol of the strong, shared faith between the Thai and Thai-Chinese communities.”

Trat City Pillar Shrine is not just an ordinary sacred site, but a pillar that has anchored the hearts of the city's people for many generations. The history of this shrine is very interesting, as it is believed that King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) graciously ordered it to be built in the Chinese architectural style as a residence for the City Pillar God. This was to protect the people of Trat from danger, especially during the political crises the city faced in the past. The striking appearance of the bright red Chinese pavilion, contrasted with exquisite dragon patterns, has become a unique identity unlike any other city pillar shrine in other provinces.

Trat City Pillar Shrine is laid out according to Feng Shui principles and ancient Chinese architecture. Inside, it enshrines the City Pillar and the highly sacred City Pillar God. Locals believe that anyone facing distress or wishing to start a new business can come here to make vows or pray for success, especially regarding trade and safety. Every day, you will see both Thai and Thai-Chinese people visiting to light incense and candles, offering sacrifices with unwavering faith.

Trat City Pillar Shrine also features an important tradition called the City Pillar God Celebration, which is grandly held every year during the Chinese New Year or according to the lunar calendar. During this time, the shrine area becomes vibrant with people. The image of the City Pillar God is paraded around the town for residents to worship at their doorsteps, accompanied by spectacular lion and dragon dances. This atmosphere reflects the love and unity of the community and the passing down of traditional culture to future generations.

Trat City Pillar Shrine is conveniently located in Trat city, near the historic Rak Khlong Bang Phra community. After paying respects for good fortune, tourists often walk around to see the old wooden houses in the nearby area. Visiting the City Pillar Shrine is therefore not just about making merit, but about absorbing the traditional way of life of Trat people, which remains simple and warm. For anyone traveling to Trat, not visiting this place is like not having truly arrived in Trat.
