“Take a boat trip to see the riverside fishing lifestyle and be amazed by the Colorful Jellyfish phenomenon that floats up to showcase its beauty in Khlong Mai Rut during the annual seasonal transition.”
Mai Rut Village is an ancient and famous fishing community located on the coast of Khlong Yai District, Trat Province. This area is geographically prominent as it is the point where the Mai Rut canal flows into the Gulf of Thailand, creating a fertile mangrove ecosystem and an important nursery for marine life. The villagers' way of life has been intertwined with the sea for decades, with most still engaged in local fishing using traditional, environmentally friendly methods. The wooden houses lining the canal and the long wooden bridges throughout the community reflect the identity of a fishing village that has firmly preserved its tranquility and local hospitality. Visitors will receive an experience different from typical beach trips, as this is a place for learning and soaking in authentic riverside culture.
The highlight that attracts tourists from all over to Ban Mai Rut is the Colorful Jellyfish phenomenon, which usually occurs during the late rainy season and early winter (around October to November). When the water in the Mai Rut canal reaches the appropriate salinity, thousands of jellyfish float to the surface to display beautiful colors including white, pink, blue, and brown, creating a stunning and unusual sight. Taking a rowboat to view the jellyfish in the canal has become an Unseen activity that has made this community famous. Additionally, Ban Mai Rut features the Two-Colored Sand Beach viewpoint, formed by the deposition of white and red sand in the same area a rare natural phenomenon and a key check-in point for travelers and photographers.
The general atmosphere of Ban Mai Rut is peaceful and clean. The community has strong waste management and nature conservation practices, ensuring that canal-side walkways and beaches remain free of litter. Tourists can visit old wooden houses serving as homestays to experience real fisherman life, whether participating in crab picking, drying salted fish, or learning how to make the famous local shrimp paste of Mai Rut Subdistrict. The kindness of the locals, who are ready to share the village's history with a smile, makes visiting here feel like vacationing at a close relative's home. This brackish water zone is also home to various bird species, making it ideal for birdwatchers and conservationists.
In addition to the beauty on land and in the canal, Ban Mai Rut has a spacious beach shaded by pine trees, perfect for relaxing in the sea breeze during the evening. Nearby, there are interesting historical sites such as Wat Mai Rut, which features beautiful and quiet religious architecture. Visiting Ban Mai Rut is thus a complete trip in terms of culture, history, and intact nature, helping to promote the circular economy at the grassroots level of Khlong Yai District. The impression gained from walking on the wooden bridge across the canal while watching fishing boats slowly sail out to the open sea at sunset is a precious memory and the main reason why many choose to return to Ban Mai Rut repeatedly to recharge their life's energy.
