“ Wat Phra Meru: Finds within the site include bronze Buddha statues and stone Buddha fragments such as arms, legs, and hands. ”

Wat Phra Meru is an important archaeological site within the ancient city of Nakhon Pathom, reflecting the prosperity of the Dvaravati period (6th–11th centuries CE), one of the earliest phases of Buddhism in central Thailand. Today, the site is under the supervision of the Fine Arts Department and has been continuously studied through archaeological excavations.

Architectural evidence indicates that Wat Phra Meru was a large principal stupa featuring a cruciform (cross-shaped) layout, a distinctive characteristic of Dvaravati art. The lower base, constructed of brick, measures approximately 54 meters on each side and rises about 10 meters high. The overall structure resembles a mandapa, with projecting porches extending in all four cardinal directions, symbolizing the Buddhist cosmological concept of the stupa as the center of the universe.

Each of the four projections once housed a seated Buddha image in the “European sitting pose” (with legs hanging down), a relatively rare artistic form in Southeast Asia. These statues were made of white stone, known as “white stone Buddha images,” which hold great significance in terms of artistic value. One of the most renowned examples, Phra Phuttha Norachet, is now preserved and displayed at the Nakhon Pathom National Museum, near Phra Pathom Chedi.

The design of the stupa is believed to have been influenced by Indian art, particularly from the Gupta and post-Gupta periods, emphasizing balanced proportions and the sacred nature of religious space. The presence of four projecting porches may also symbolize accessibility for worshippers from all directions, representing the spread of Buddhist teachings across the four quarters of the world.

From an archaeological perspective, Wat Phra Meru plays a crucial role in understanding the development of ancient Nakhon Pathom, once a major religious and trading center in the Tha Chin River basin. Discoveries such as ancient bricks, structural remains, and sculptural fragments reveal the complexity of urban planning and the sophistication of artistic expression during that era.

Although only the base of the stupa and structural remains survive today, the site retains deep historical and spiritual significance. It is an ideal destination for those interested in the origins of Buddhist art in Thailand and offers meaningful connections to nearby landmarks such as Phra Pathom Chedi and the national museum, where artifacts from the site are carefully preserved and exhibited.
