“A two-story masonry building featuring authentic traditional Thai architecture, with chofah finials, bai raka bargeboards, hang hong gable ends, and a pediment carved with Vajira sword motifs decorated with blue glass mosaics.”

Vachirayarmaya Throne Hall is an important royal building within Sanam Chandra Palace in Nakhon Pathom Province, Thailand. It was constructed during the reign of King Vajiravudh (Rama VI) around 1917, with the purpose of serving as a royal residence and a place for performing royal duties when the king visited Nakhon Pathom. This reflects the king’s vision of the palace as both a private royal residence and a functional administrative center during certain periods, as well as a space for cultural expression and royal ceremonial activities of that era.

The building features a highly refined traditional Thai architectural style. It is a two-story masonry structure built on a raised base in accordance with Thai architectural principles, emphasizing elegance and suitability for the tropical climate. The roof is designed in a layered Thai style with beautifully tiered gables, decorated with chofah finials, bai raka bargeboards, and hang hong end ornaments in the classical royal tradition. The roof is covered with glazed tiles that reflect sunlight and enhance the building’s visual prominence. The pediment is intricately carved with the Vajira sword emblem, the royal symbol of King Rama VI, decorated with blue glass mosaics, giving the structure a distinctive identity that strongly reflects the king’s personal royal symbolism.

Inside, the throne hall is richly decorated with exquisite Thai craftsmanship, including a finely carved wooden ceiling featuring star and floral motifs, some parts gilded with gold leaf to enhance its elegance and sacred atmosphere. The tall windows, designed in a traditional “glass house” style, allow natural light and ventilation, reflecting a harmonious blend of aesthetic beauty and practical design. The interior layout combines a grand audience hall and private royal chambers, allowing the space to function for both official ceremonies and private royal use.

Another notable aspect is the strong presence of King Rama VI’s symbolism throughout the building, including the number “6” integrated into decorative elements, the Vajira sword motif on the pediment, and the color tones and design elements that reflect his preference for order, dignity, and military-inspired elegance. Altogether, these elements embody the national ideology of “Nation, Religion, and Monarchy,” which was central to his reign.

Today, Vachirayarmaya Throne Hall is preserved as part of the Sanam Chandra Palace historical site. It is open to the public for educational visits focused on Thai history and architecture and serves as one of the key photographic landmarks of Nakhon Pathom. The building remains well-preserved in its original beauty and continues to clearly reflect the cultural and historical value of the Thai royal heritage.
