“The old city gate was used as a gathering place for soldiers before going to battle.”

Chumphon Gate is not only an ancient city gate but also a center of history, astrology, and spirituality for Nakhon Ratchasima (Korat).

History of Construction and Urban Planning

Era: Built during the reign of King Narai the Great around 2199 CE, when he ordered the relocation of the city and the construction of new walls.

Western Urban Plan: Nakhon Ratchasima's urban plan is rectangular, influenced by French engineers who arrived at that time. This gave it a unique layout, distinguishing it from other cities during the Ayutthaya period.

  • Four Gates: Korat historically had four city gates (based on superstition) in each direction. Their names and meanings are as follows:

  • North: Phon Saen Gate

  • East: Phon Lan Gate (currently rebuilt)

  • South: Chai Narong Gate (currently rebuilt)

  • West: Chumphon Gate (the original gate that still stands)

Meaning of the Name: The name Chumphon comes from the word "chumphon," meaning a gate used as a gathering point for soldiers before going to war.

Architectural Features and Materials

  • Appearance: Pratu Chumphon is the only city gate that has retained its original appearance, with only minor renovations. The gate is constructed of large laterite blocks mixed with bricks.
  • War Tower: Above the gate arch is a war tower (fortified rampart), a wooden structure used for watchtowers and as a military observation point, demonstrating the architectural style of fortresses during the Ayutthaya period.

Connection with Thao Suranari (Ya Mo)

  • Connection: Pratu Chumphon is crucial to the history of Korat, as it is located behind the monument to Thao Suranari (Ya Mo), the heroine who saved Korat from the army of Chao Anuwong.

  • Battle Direction: It is believed that Ya Mo's army fought and repulsed Chao Anuwong's army, using the direction of the western city gate as a strategic guide.

Beliefs and Rituals of "Passing Through Pratu Chumphon"

Prattu Chumphon is not only an ancient site but also a gateway of faith, with important rituals held by the people of Korat:

  • Passing Through Pratu Chumphon Once: It is believed that those who pass through Pratu Chumphon will return to Korat. (Traditional practice by outsiders)

  • Passing through the gate three times: It is believed that you will find a partner from Korat.

Furthermore, the Fine Arts Department registered Chumphon Gate as a national historic site on January 3, 1937, and the Korat City Wall as a national historic site on September 27, 1936.

Therefore, Chumphon Gate is a sacred place where people regularly visit to pay their respects and perform the gate-passing ceremony. It blends national history with long-held local traditions.
