“It is the location of the Nakhon Ratchasima City Pillar, which is a sacred object of the province. Both Thai and Chinese people respect it and regularly go to pay homage.”

City Pillar Nakhon Ratchasima Shrine is one of the oldest and most important historical sites in Korat. It was built during the Ayutthaya period, between 1656 and 1688, during the reign of King Narai the Great. This marked the official establishment and expansion of Nakhon Ratchasima (or Korat) as a fortress and important trading center in the northeastern region.

History and the Original City Pillar

  • Establishment: The erection of the City Pillar is a sacred ritual that defines the city's boundaries and boosts morale. It is believed to be the seat of the city's guardian deity.

  • City Pillar: The original City Pillar was a simple carved wooden pillar. It was registered as an ancient monument by the Fine Arts Department on January 3, 1937.

Current Court Architecture

  • Reconstruction: The current City Pillar Shrine building is not the original; it was rebuilt in 1963 to maintain its stability and honor as an important historical site.

  • Building Style: The shrine is designed as a modern pavilion, blending Thai art with local religious beliefs and culture. The structure is stronger and more imposing than the original shrine.

  • Important Ceremony: This shrine received great royal grace when His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great and Her Majesty Queen Sirikit the Queen Mother presided over the City Pillar Ceremony in 1966, a moment of immense pride for the people of Korat.

Spiritual and Cultural Significance

  • Spiritual Center: The City Pillar Shrine is the spiritual center of Nakhon Ratchasima residents, symbolizing the city's beginnings and prosperity.

  • Worship: Passersby and visitors to Korat believe they should pay their respects to the City Pillar for good fortune, merit, and blessings for success in their careers and safe travels.

  • Blend of beliefs: Within the City Pillar Shrine is also the shrine of Ah Kong, a deity according to the beliefs of Thai-Chinese people, demonstrating the harmonious coexistence of Chinese and Thai cultures in the area.
