Ho Phra Isuan and the Giant Swing Nakhon Si Thammarat are located along Ratchadamnoen Road in the heart of Nakhon Si Thammarat city. This ancient site is of great significance as it reflects the long-standing influence of Brahmanism–Hinduism, which coexisted alongside Buddhism in the ancient land known as Tambralinga. The site serves as important evidence of the diversity of beliefs, rituals, and political structures that once shaped Nakhon Si Thammarat as a major regional center.

Ho Phra Isuan functioned as a place for Brahmanical religious ceremonies, particularly those dedicated to Phra Isuan (Lord Shiva), one of the principal deities in Hindu belief. Lord Shiva symbolizes destruction as a means of renewal, a concept closely linked to cosmic balance, fertility, and the stability of the state. Such beliefs were especially important for a city like Nakhon Si Thammarat, which played a vital role in administration, trade, and regional governance in the past.

Architecturally, Ho Phra Isuan is a small brick-and-mortar structure with a simple yet dignified form that conveys sacredness and ritual significance. It is believed to have once housed sacred Hindu images and served as a ceremonial space where royal Brahmins conducted rituals to invoke divine protection and prosperity for the city and its rulers.

In front of Ho Phra Isuan stands the Giant Swing, which is closely associated with the Triyampawai Ceremony, also known as the Swinging Ceremony. This ancient Brahmanical ritual was performed to honor Lord Shiva and to pray for fertility, abundance, and harmony within the kingdom. Historically, Nakhon Si Thammarat was one of the few major cities in Thailand where this ceremony was officially conducted, highlighting its importance as a religious and political center.

Although the Swinging Ceremony is no longer practiced today, Ho Phra Isuan and the Giant Swing remain powerful historical and cultural symbols. They represent the deep connection between religion, ritual practices, and state authority in the past. More than just ancient monuments, these structures serve as living reminders of the spiritual beliefs, cultural identity, and historical roots of Nakhon Si Thammarat that continue to resonate through time.

• Public transportation: Take a local songthaew on the “Stadium – Hua Thanon” route, which runs along Ratchadamnoen Road throughout the day. Get off near Ho Phra Isuan and walk a short distance to the site.

• It is recommended to visit this site together with nearby landmarks such as Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan and the Nakhon Si Thammarat National Museum to gain a comprehensive understanding of the city’s historical background.
