“The sanctuary’s elevated base rising more than 2 meters above ground level, a rare architectural feature, and Luang Pho Sung, a sacred stucco Buddha image in the Maravijaya posture enshrined inside the vihara.”

Phra Wihan Sung Nakhon Si Thammarat, commonly known by locals as “Hor Phra Sung,” is an important historic site located just outside the northern boundary of the old city walls, near Sanam Na Mueang along Ratchadamnoen Road. Its most distinctive feature is that the vihara was constructed atop an artificially raised earthen mound, standing approximately 2.10 meters above the surrounding ground, clearly emphasizing the sacredness of the site.

Scholars believe that this location may originally have been a Brahman–Hindu sanctuary before later being restored and adapted for Buddhist use. Inside the vihara is enshrined Luang Pho Sung, a large stucco Buddha image in the Maravijaya posture, dating to the late Ayutthaya period. The Buddha image displays a dignified and harmonious form, reflecting both the strong faith of the local community and the refined craftsmanship of the era.

Another remarkable aspect of Phra Wihan Sung is its fusion of Thai and Chinese artistic influences. This is particularly evident in the decorative stucco work on the pedestal of the principal Buddha image, which features cloud motifs, peony flowers, and the auspicious Chinese character “Fu” (福), meaning happiness, prosperity, and good fortune. These elements testify to the influence of Chinese trade and culture in Nakhon Si Thammarat during the early Rattanakosin period, especially during the reign of King Rama III.

According to local beliefs passed down within the Na Nakhon family, Phra Wihan Sung is also associated with King Taksin the Great, who is believed to have visited or passed through this area during his southern campaigns. This connection further enhances the site’s significance, making it not only a religious monument but also a place deeply rooted in historical memory and local devotion.

Today, Phra Wihan Sung remains a revered site where visitors and locals come to pay homage to Luang Pho Sung, seeking blessings for stability, success, and prosperity, while also appreciating its historical and artistic value in the center of the city.

How to Get There
  • By private car: Drive along Ratchadamnoen Road, the city’s main thoroughfare, heading toward the Provincial Hall. Phra Wihan Sung is located along the roadside near Sanam Na Mueang, opposite the Nakhon Si Thammarat Post Office. Parking is available along Ratchadamnoen Road or around the Sanam Na Mueang area.
  • By public transport: Take a local songthaew on the “Sanam Kila – Hua Thanon” route (blue vehicles), which passes directly by Phra Wihan Sung throughout the day. Inform the driver to drop you off at Sanam Na Mueang or Hor Phra Sung.

Travel Tips

  • It is recommended to walk onward to nearby attractions such as the Nakhon Si Thammarat City Pillar Shrine and Hor Phra Phuttha Sihing, both located within 100–200 meters.
