“The traditional Thai wooden monk quarters, consisting of three connected twin-style wooden houses, featuring exceptionally well-preserved and intricate wood carvings, considered among the finest wooden structures in Thailand.”

Wat Wang Tawan Tok Nakhon Si Thammarat is located on Ratchadamnoen Road in the center of Nakhon Si Thammarat city, directly opposite Wat Wang Tawan Ok. Historically, this area once served as a “wang” (palace residence) of Chao Phraya Nakhon Si Thammarat (Noi), a prominent governor of Nakhon Si Thammarat during the early Rattanakosin period. He played a significant role in administration, military affairs, and relations with the royal court. After his passing, his descendants of the Na Nakhon family donated the former palace grounds to establish a temple as an act of merit and as a spiritual center for the local community.

The most remarkable feature of Wat Wang Tawan Tok is its wooden monk quarters, a group of three elevated twin-style Thai wooden houses constructed during the reign of King Rama V by Phra Khru Ka Kaeo (Si), a former abbot of the temple. The structures were built using high-quality hardwoods, including Mai Khiam and Mai Lumpho, both known for their exceptional durability and resistance to the southern tropical climate. This careful choice of materials has allowed the buildings to remain in excellent condition to this day.

The architectural and artistic highlight lies in the extensive wood carvings throughout the buildings, including the gables, window shutters, ventilation panels, and wall sections. The decorative motifs feature traditional Thai kanok patterns, floral designs, geometric forms, and hybrid motifs, reflecting the refined craftsmanship of local artisans. These elements also reveal a harmonious blend of traditional Thai architecture with subtle Western influences that became increasingly popular during that historical period.

The woodcarving craftsmanship of these monk quarters is widely regarded as a masterpiece of Nakhon Si Thammarat artisanship. The delicately pierced wooden panels resemble fine lacework, and the structures were assembled using traditional joinery techniques without iron nails, demonstrating profound indigenous architectural knowledge. Inside, the original layout, wooden floors, walls, and structural elements have been carefully preserved, allowing visitors to experience the serene atmosphere and cultural grandeur of Nakhon Si Thammarat in the past.

Due to its outstanding historical and artistic value, the wooden monk quarters of Wat Wang Tawan Tok have been recognized as an award-winning conservation building and serve as an important study site for traditional Thai architecture. Scholars, architects, and visitors from across the country frequently visit to learn about the rich heritage and craftsmanship passed down through generations.

How to Get There
  • Private Car: Drive along Ratchadamnoen Road, the main thoroughfare of Nakhon Si Thammarat. The temple is located opposite Wat Wang Tawan Ok and near the Khu Kwang commercial area. Parking is available within the temple grounds.
  • Public Transportation: Take a local songthaew on the “Stadium – Hua Thanon” route (blue or white vehicles), which passes directly in front of the temple throughout the day. Alternatively, motorcycle taxis or traditional three-wheeled taxis (“Hua Kob”) are available from the railway station or bus terminal.

Travel Tips
  • For photography, the best viewpoint is from the lower front area, which offers a full view of the three connected wooden houses. Visitors may also step onto the upper veranda (shoes must be removed) to closely admire the detailed wood carvings on the windows and panels.
  • As the area is both a monastic residence and a sacred site, visitors should dress modestly and behave respectfully.
  • After visiting Wat Wang Tawan Tok, it is recommended to cross the street to explore Wat Wang Tawan Ok, which is historically connected to the former palace complex and provides a more complete understanding of the area’s past.
