“The restored old city wall on the northern side, featuring fortifications and Bai Sema boundary markers standing prominently along the canal”

Nakhon Si Thammarat City Wall  is a historical site that reflects the former glory of the ancient city of “Tambralinga”, which was once the most important provincial city in southern Thailand. According to legend, the city wall was first constructed during the reign of King Si Thammasokaraj when the city was established on Sai Kaeo Beach. Originally, it was an earthen wall surrounded by a moat to protect against enemies approaching by land and water. Later, during the reign of King Narai the Great of the Ayutthaya Kingdom, the wall underwent major renovations based on designs by French engineers, transforming it into a strong brick-and-mortar structure with fortifications in the Western architectural style.

In the past, the city wall extended around the city in a rectangular shape, covering a vast area and featuring multiple city gates in different directions. Over time, urban expansion caused much of the wall to deteriorate and collapse. Eventually, the Fine Arts Department undertook the restoration of the northern section along Mum Pom Road, returning it to its current well-preserved and visually impressive condition. Today, the wall no longer serves a defensive purpose but has become a public space and an important landmark where locals and tourists come to relax.

Along the wall are rows of Bai Sema boundary stones placed atop the parapet with meticulous design. Below lies a green lawn contrasting with the aged brick color of the wall, while the city canal runs parallel along its length. This creates a picturesque atmosphere both during the day and at night when decorative lights illuminate the wall. Visiting this site is not merely about viewing ancient ruins, but about experiencing the roots and pride of the people of Nakhon Si Thammarat that have been passed down for over a thousand years amid the changes of time.

How to Get There
  • By private car: Drive into the city center of Nakhon Si Thammarat and take Ratchadamnoen Road heading north until reaching the Mum Pom Road or Si Thammarat Road area. The city wall is located along the city canal. Parking is available along the roadside or nearby parking areas.
  • By public transportation: Take a local songthaew that passes the Provincial Hall or along Ratchadamnoen Road (yellow or white vehicles) and ask to get off at the Old City Wall. Alternatively, you can hire a three-wheeled motorized taxi (locally known as “Hua Kop”) to reach the site conveniently.

Travel Tips
  • The best time for photography is in the late afternoon (from 4:30 PM onward), when the sunlight is softer and the decorative lights are turned on in the evening.
  • It is recommended to walk along the entire length of the wall to find various photo angles, especially from the opposite side of the canal where reflections of the wall can be seen in the water.
  • Do not write on or climb onto the wall or the Bai Sema stones to help preserve the historical site in its original condition.
  • On Fridays and Saturdays, nearby areas often host local markets or walking streets where visitors can explore and enjoy local food.
