“A dark-patinated bronze statue depicting a soldier in full combat readiness, holding a rifle with a bayonet. The base of the monument is inscribed with the names of fallen heroes, honoring those who sacrificed their lives for the nation.”

Monument of the Thai Hero Phor Ja Dam, respectfully known by locals as “Por Jor Dam,” traces its historical significance back to December 8, 1941, during World War II. On that day, Japanese forces landed at Ban Tha Phae in Nakhon Si Thammarat Province. Thai troops from the 39th Infantry Battalion and the 15th Artillery Battalion, together with military cadets, bravely engaged in defending the country. Fierce fighting ensued, including close-quarters combat on the battlefield.

After the war, government officials, soldiers, and local residents jointly established this monument on the former battle site to honor the fallen heroes. The statue portrays a soldier standing firmly and facing north, the direction from which enemy forces advanced, symbolizing vigilance and sacrifice.

Every year on December 8, the 4th Army Region holds a memorial ceremony featuring wreath-laying and merit-making rituals. Many residents of Nakhon Si Thammarat attend the event to pay their respects, pray, and remember Por Jor Dam, who is widely revered as a guardian spirit protecting the city from danger.

How to Get There
  • By Private Car: Drive along Ratchadamnoen Road heading north (toward Phrom Khiri or Tha Sala districts) and enter Wachirawut Camp. At the main guard post, inform the officers that you are visiting Por Jor Dam. Continue along the main road inside the camp; the monument is located at the central roundabout.
  • By Public Transport: Take a local songthaew on the “Stadium – Hua Thanon” route or any route that enters Wachirawut Camp (white or blue vehicles). Inform the driver that you wish to get off at the Vee Thai Monument (Por Jor Dam).

Travel Tips
  • As the monument is located inside a military camp, visitors should dress modestly and comply with military regulations.

  • Nearby is the Vee Thai Museum, which displays weapons and military equipment from the World War II era and is well worth a visit.

  • Local people often offer garlands, firecrackers, or traditional Manora dance performances as acts of devotion, reflecting strong belief in the monument’s spiritual significance.
