“Pay respects to the statue of King Taksin the Great and climb 250 steps to Tham Tak Fah Cave to see ancient Buddha images and a sacred Buddha footprint amid a peaceful mountain atmosphere.”

Wat Khao Khun Phanom is a must-visit destination when traveling to Phrom Khiri District. Beyond its architectural beauty, the temple is deeply connected to local historical beliefs that King Taksin the Great was not executed, but instead ordained as a monk and practiced meditation in this cave until his passing.

Tham Tak Fah Cave (Tham Hew Tak Fah) is the temple’s most important highlight. Visitors must climb approximately 250 steps to reach the cave on the mountainside. Inside are more than 30 ancient bronze Buddha images, along with a replica Buddha footprint carved from hardwood and decorated with mother-of-pearl inlay and 108 auspicious symbols. The cave interior is cool, serene, and solemn, with natural openings that allow sunlight to shine through, giving rise to the name “Tham Tak Fah,” meaning “Cave Open to the Sky.”

The architecture of the temple is distinguished by brick-and-mortar walls resembling ancient city fortifications. The front walls of the viharn are adorned with stucco reliefs and Chinese porcelain decorations, reflecting artistic influences from the late Ayutthaya to early Rattanakosin periods.

Within the temple grounds is a museum displaying important artifacts, including an ancient bamboo winnowing tray believed to have been used personally by King Taksin, as well as various Buddha images discovered inside the cave.

In front of the temple lies the Sacred Spring, believed to have been used for bathing and drinking. This holy water source is deeply revered by the local community.

Today, Wat Khao Khun Phanom serves as both a center of historical belief and a scenic viewpoint overlooking Khao Khun Phanom Mountain. It is an ideal place for visitors seeking tranquility, cultural insight, and a deeper connection to Thailand’s historical heritage.
