“Be amazed by the grandeur of Nan Fon Saen Ha, the most iconic waterfall tier, and enjoy trekking along the 3.7-kilometer nature study trail”

Krung Ching Waterfall is a source of pride for the people of Nakhon Si Thammarat. It is located within the lush forest known as “Krung Ching,” named after the Ching palm, a native palm species commonly found in the area. Beyond its natural beauty, this forest also holds historical significance as a former strategic area during Thailand’s past political conflicts.

The journey begins with a 3.7-kilometer nature study trail (7.4 kilometers round trip) that winds through one of the most pristine tropical rainforests in southern Thailand. Along the trail, visitors are surrounded by cool, humid air and the sounds of diverse birdlife, including rare species that attract birdwatchers from around the world.

The highlight not to be missed is the second tier, known as Nan Fon Saen Ha, a steep cliff waterfall where cascading water disperses into fine mist resembling falling rain. This iconic scene was once featured on the reverse side of Thailand’s 1,000-baht banknote, making it a nationally recognized natural landmark. Krung Ching Waterfall consists of seven tiers: Nan Mat Phrae, Nan Fon Saen Ha, Nan Ching, Nan Jon, Nan Ton Tor, Nan Wang Ruea Bin, and Nan Long Phrae, each offering its own unique charm.

Along the trail, visitors will encounter giant tree ferns (Mahasadam), ancient plants dating back to prehistoric times, as well as rare endemic flora. While the trail has been improved for accessibility, it still preserves its natural character. The peaceful atmosphere allows visitors to truly connect with nature. The clear, cool water flowing from Krung Ching nourishes local communities and orchards in Nopphitam District throughout the year.

Facilities at the ranger station include basic amenities such as a camping area, small shops, and a visitor service center. A visit to Krung Ching is not just about seeing a waterfall, but about stepping back into an ancient forest filled with history and natural vitality. The fresh air and rich ozone levels of Khao Luang’s forest provide a deeply refreshing experience. Standing before the powerful rock cliffs and continuous streams of water leaves a lasting impression, making Krung Ching a perfect representation of Nakhon Si Thammarat as a true city of nature.
