“Retrace the ancient Hindu civilization on a hilltop View the thousand-year-old stone Yoni base and Shiva Lingam”

Khao Kha Archaeological Site is an important Shaivite Hindu religious complex with great historical significance. It is located on a small hill in Sao Phao Subdistrict, Tha Sala District, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, in a peaceful and natural setting. The site dates back to the 12th–14th Buddhist centuries, reflecting a period of cultural prosperity in the past. During that era, Khao Kha was not only a religious sanctuary but also a center of an ancient community situated along trans-peninsular trade routes, connecting with Indian and foreign merchants through nearby coastal areas.

The geography of Khao Kha was deliberately chosen based on the belief in sacred mountains or Mount Meru. The site shows strong influences from South Indian Pallava art, which was widespread throughout the peninsula. Visible remains include brick building foundations and pedestals for sacred objects. One of the most remarkable discoveries is the sandstone Shiva Lingam and the Yoni base, which remain well preserved and visually impressive.

The architecture reflects a belief system deeply connected to nature and religion. The site also features an advanced ancient water management system, consisting of wells, drainage channels (Somukha), and “Traphang,” or ancient reservoirs, located around the hill in all four cardinal directions. These elements demonstrate highly sophisticated engineering for its time.

The Fine Arts Department has surveyed and restored the area, transforming it into an important historical learning site. The atmosphere atop Khao Kha is shaded by large trees and cooled by gentle breezes, making it ideal for exploration. From the archaeological remains, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding Tha Sala District.

Access to the summit is convenient via well-maintained stairways and walking paths. The site provides valuable insight into the arrival and spread of Hinduism in Southern Thailand. Along the path, visitors can experience a serene and well-preserved natural environment. Informational signs in both Thai and English explain key points throughout the site.

Khao Kha is not only an archaeological landmark but also a symbol of ancient spiritual devotion. It is especially suitable for students, researchers, and those interested in history and art. Visiting the site feels like stepping back in time to an era of great civilization. Khao Kha Archaeological Site therefore stands as an important cultural heritage preserved by the people of Nakhon Si Thammarat.
