The garden is visited by both locals and tourists busy. It is popular as a lookout point with a good view of the old town, has a restaurant, a large children's playground and a library with a reading garden.

The bus line 10 direction Ostermundigen (Station Rose Garden) is the rose garden in just a few minutes from the center of reach. Parking for private are in the vicinity, however, scarce and usually overcrowded.

From 1765 until the opening of Schosshalde cemetery in 1877, the site was used as a cemetery. In 1913 it was converted into a public park and from 1917 roses were bred here.

Since 1918, the pond with the two monumental groups from Europe and Neptune Karl Hänny and 1956 consists of the park was redesigned. A 1937 created by Arnold Huggler bust of Jeremias Gotthelf had to make way for the construction of the 1960 Summer restaurants and was moved from the pavilion with the dialect library.

Today in Bern Rose Garden roses grow 223, 200 Iris and 28 Rhododendron species. 1997 which had been inherited from the time of the cemetery cross with twelve new avenue was planted linden trees.
