“A covered wooden bridge adorned with triangular paintings depicting Lucerne’s history, beside the Water Tower, forming an iconic medieval ensemble.”
Chapel Bridge, known locally as Kapellbrücke, was constructed in 1333 and holds the distinction of being the oldest covered wooden footbridge in Europe. Spanning the Reuss River at the heart of Lucerne, it serves not only as a pedestrian crossing but as a vivid “walkable timeline” of Lucerne’s rich history.
What truly sets the bridge apart are the series of triangular paintings installed under its roof, dating mostly from the 17th century. These artworks vividly depict key historical events, legends, and religious stories significant to Lucerne and Switzerland, offering visitors a unique cultural window into the city’s past.
In 1993, a devastating fire damaged much of the bridge and destroyed many of the paintings. Thanks to a rapid and meticulous restoration, the Chapel Bridge was restored to its original form, preserving both its physical structure and its historical spirit.
Adjacent to the bridge stands the Wasserturm (Water Tower), an iconic octagonal tower dating from the 13th century. Over centuries, the tower has served multiple purposes, including fortification, armory, and prison. Today, it forms an integral part of Lucerne’s picturesque medieval skyline alongside the bridge.
Visiting Chapel Bridge offers more than a simple crossing; it invites you to step into a living storybook where architecture, history, and art intertwine. Strolling across the bridge, you engage with Lucerne’s heritage through its captivating paintings and surrounding medieval ambiance, making it an unforgettable experience.
