Staubbach Falls is one of the 72 waterfalls of the Lauterbrunnen Valley and is located right next to further water spectacles such as the Trümmelbach Falls, which are cut into rock. In the summer the latter Falls are accessible by means of a narrow path and a rock balcony. Info panels offer historic and scientific background information on these natural phenomena.

In the summer warm winds swirl the waters around, so that the Falls spray in all directions.  The stream, on reaching the verge of the rocky walls of the valley, forms a cascade so high that it is almost lost in spray before it reaches the level of the valley.  These droplets of water spray gave the brook and the waterfall its name, Staub = dust.

After rain, and early in the season when fed by the melting snows, the Staubbach Falls is a very striking object. The force of the stream above the fall at such times is sufficient to carry the water clear of the precipice, and the whole mass descends in a condition of liquid dust, between spray and cloud, that sways to and fro with the gentlest breeze. In a dry summer, when the supply of water is much reduced, the effect is comparatively insignificant. The height_ of the cascade is between 800 and 900 ft, one of the highest in Europe formed of a single unbroken fall.


  • Travel any day, there are a tour package of Staubbach Falls, sold in Interaken.
  • On the way to Jungfrau, you should to drop here or on the way back.
  • The falls were featured on the Swiss 3-centime postage stamp of the 1930s.
  • There is no admission free to the falls.
  • Behind the falls, there is a trekking path you should explore.

From any place in the town, we could view the fall too. If you have limited time of traveling, you may not need to get to the fall as I did.
