“ UNESCO site - vineyard terraces ”

Lavaux coveres 830 hectares of terraced wineyards that strech for about 30 kms along Geneva Lake. It is Switzerland's largest contiguous vineyard area with terrace after terrace offering magificent views.

Although there is some evidence that vines were grown in the area in Roman times, the actual vine terraces can be traced back to the 11th century, when Benedictine and Cistercian monasteries controlled the area. It benefits from a temperate climate, but the southern aspect of the terraces with the reflection of the sun in the lake and the stone walls gives a mediterranean character to the region. The main wine grape variety grown here is the Chasselas.

At the point of wine-growing area set high above Lake Geneva (Lac Léman), an attitude of 500 meters above the lake level, it provides the perfect backdrop for winelovers. The natural, cultural and culinary highlights of this UNESCO area are well worth a visit.

To get here:

Train: from Lausanne or Montreux/Vevey reachable by train: Lutry, Vilette, Cully, Epesses, Rivaz and St-Saphorin with the S1 and S3 trains (the S3 doesn't stop everywhere), and Grandvaux with the S2 train. Chexbres is reachable from Vevey with the S31 train.
Boat: Taking a steam-powered boat from Ouchy in Lausanne or Vevey/Montreux. Can drop at Lutry, Cully and Rivaz.

Blue-yellow "Train des Vignes" is a very convenient way to travel. Taking about 12 mins from Vevey to the vineyards up to Puidoux-Chexbres.

As mentioned above, there is also a blue-yellow Train-des-Vignes that runs from Vevey to Puidoux which can be quite scenic if you aren't fit enough to hike or walk around the Lavaux. There is also a funicular from Vevey to Mont-Pelerin station (where you can walk in perhaps 1.5 hours to the Mont-Pelerin summit at 1080 m which has a viewing tower), a train from Vevey to Les Pleiades (1360 m), and several others. Although not exactly the Lavaux, the cogwheel train from Montreux to Rochers-de-Naye (2042 m) is great because of excellent views on a clear day (although slightly expensive).

Getting around by a train, you will see nothing but gorgeous views of Lake Geneva and Savoie Alps between Lutry and Vevey. Train staions are often in the suburban commerce centeres of the larger cities i.e. away from the vineyards themselves.
