Lavaux is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located along the northern shores of Lake Geneva (Lac Léman), stretching approximately 30 kilometers between Lausanne and Montreux. This stunning region covers 830 hectares of terraced vineyards, making it Switzerland’s largest continuous wine-growing area. With row after row of vines rising above the lake at around 500 meters elevation, Lavaux offers panoramic views that are simply unforgettable.

While traces of vineyards in Lavaux date back to Roman times, the iconic terraced structure we see today began in the 11th century, when Benedictine and Cistercian monks developed the land. This environment is ideal for cultivating Chasselas, the region’s signature white grape variety known for its crisp and delicate flavor.

Visitors can explore charming villages like Cully, Rivaz, and Saint-Saphorin, enjoy wine tastings directly from family-run cellars, and stroll along walking or biking paths that meander through the vineyards. The Lavaux area isn’t just a visual marvel — it’s also a cultural and culinary treasure where wine, tradition, and Swiss hospitality come together beautifully.

How to get there

By train: Take a train from Lausanne or Montreux to one of the nearby Lavaux villages (e.g., Cully or Lutry). From there, walking trails and local buses connect the vineyard areas.
By boat: In summer, scenic boat rides on Lake Geneva stop at charming lakeside villages.
By car: There are well-marked vineyard routes ideal for slow drives.

Blue-yellow "Train des Vignes" is a very convenient way to travel. Taking about 12 mins from Vevey to the vineyards up to Puidoux-Chexbres.

Still traveling in the train and having enough time to think whether to get off or not. The Lavaux covers the vineyard area about 30 kms along the shore of Geneva Lake.

As mentioned above, there is also a blue-yellow Train-des-Vignes that runs from Vevey to Puidoux which can be quite scenic if you aren't fit enough to hike or walk around the Lavaux. There is also a funicular from Vevey to Mont-Pelerin station (where you can walk in perhaps 1.5 hours to the Mont-Pelerin summit at 1080 m which has a viewing tower), a train from Vevey to Les Pleiades (1360 m), and several others. Although not exactly the Lavaux, the cogwheel train from Montreux to Rochers-de-Naye (2042 m) is great because of excellent views on a clear day (although slightly expensive).

Getting around by a train, you will see nothing but gorgeous views of Lake Geneva and Savoie Alps between Lutry and Vevey. Train staions are often in the suburban commerce centeres of the larger cities i.e. away from the vineyards themselves.
