A Fairytale Fortress on Lake Geneva

Chillon Castle (Château de Chillon) is one of Switzerland’s most iconic and photographed castles, beautifully situated on the shores of Lake Geneva, near the city of Montreux. Built on a small rocky island, this medieval fortress once held strategic importance as it controlled trade routes between Northern and Southern Europe.

With a history spanning over 1,000 years, Chillon Castle has witnessed countless historical moments. It served as a residence for the Counts of Savoy and later became a state prison. Today, the castle is a remarkable testament to medieval architecture and Swiss heritage, offering visitors a chance to explore more than 40 rooms, including grand halls, dungeons, chapels, courtyards, and the iconic tower.

What sets Chillon Castle apart is its breathtaking location—its silhouette mirrored in the pristine waters of Lake Geneva, framed by the majestic Alps. How to Get There

  • From Geneva: Take a train to Montreux (~1 hour), then a local bus (No. 201) or walk along the scenic lakeside promenade (~30–40 mins) to the castle.

  • From Lausanne: Train to Montreux (~30 mins), followed by a bus or lakeside walk.

  • By Boat: One of the most romantic ways to arrive is by taking a CGN boat from Montreux or Vevey, docking near the castle.

  • By Car: Drive via the A9 motorway, exit at Montreux, and follow signs to the castle (~10 mins from the exit). Paid parking is available nearby.

Travel Tips

  • Arrive early to avoid crowds and capture beautiful photos of the castle against the calm morning light.

  • From Montreux, consider walking along the lakeside promenade—a scenic and peaceful approach (~30–40 mins walk).

  • If time allows, take a boat ride for a panoramic view of the castle and Lake Geneva.

  • Don’t miss climbing to the tower for spectacular views of the lake and the surrounding mountains.

  • The surrounding gardens and picnic areas are perfect for relaxing after your castle tour.
