“Symbol of the Swiss Alps, a dream destination for travelers around the world.”

Gornergrat

An Iconic Alpine Viewpoint Offering Unparalleled Views of the Matterhorn

Gornergrat is one of Switzerland’s most iconic mountain viewpoints, located at an elevation of 3,089 meters in the heart of the Alps, near the charming car-free village of Zermatt. This spectacular ridge offers visitors the chance to admire the majestic Matterhorn up close, along with breathtaking panoramas of the surrounding peaks and glaciers.

Reaching Gornergrat is an experience in itself. The scenic ride aboard the Gornergrat Bahn, Europe’s highest open-air cogwheel railway, takes approximately 33 minutes from Zermatt. As the train ascends the mountain, passengers are treated to a visual feast of pine forests, glacial streams, and snow-capped peaks.

At the summit, visitors can enjoy a 360-degree panorama of more than 20 towering Alpine peaks, including views of the impressive Gorner Glacier. The star attraction, of course, is the Matterhorn, perfectly framed for postcard-worthy photographs.

The summit area is well-equipped with the historic Kulmhotel Gornergrat — the highest hotel in Europe — as well as a panoramic viewing terrace, souvenir shops, and a cozy restaurant, all designed to enhance your mountain adventure.

How to Get There
  • From Zermatt: Take the Gornergrat Bahn from the Gornergrat Bahn Station, located next to Zermatt’s main railway station. The journey to the summit takes about 33 minutes.

  • From other cities: Travel to Zermatt by train. Since Zermatt is a car-free village, private vehicles must be parked at Täsch, where visitors can transfer to a shuttle train or electric taxi to reach Zermatt.

  • Note: Private vehicles cannot enter Zermatt itself.

Travel Tips
  • Check the weather forecast before your visit to ensure optimal visibility. Clear mornings often provide the best chances to see the Matterhorn without cloud cover.

  • Dress warmly year-round, as temperatures at the summit remain low even during summer.

  • Morning visits are highly recommended — the light is ideal for photography, and crowds are smaller.

  • The best photo spot for the Matterhorn is on the main panoramic terrace directly in front of the station exit.

  • After your visit to Gornergrat, take time to explore Zermatt: stroll through the picturesque village, indulge in local chocolate, or visit the Matterhorn Museum for more insights into the region’s history.

  • Open year-round

  • Train operating hours: Generally from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with departures every 30–60 minutes depending on the season.

  • Ticket prices:

    • Adult return ticket starts from approximately CHF 95 (around 3,800 THB)

    • Discounts available for children and holders of the Swiss Half Fare Card or Swiss Travel Pass.

  • Weather conditions:

    • In winter, the area is blanketed in snow, perfect for skiing and winter photography.

    • In summer, enjoy pleasant cool temperatures and stunning views of green alpine meadows and sparkling glaciers.

Gornergrat is more than just a scenic viewpoint — it’s an unforgettable alpine experience that offers breathtaking natural beauty, Swiss engineering marvels, and timeless memories. A must-visit for anyone exploring the Swiss Alps!

Totally, we took about over 3 hours here, still having time to go shopping in Zermatt town. I stayed 2 nights in Zermatt and was going to get to Montreux tomorrow.

Bye Bye Matterhorn on Gornergrat with this shot.
Comparing to Jungfrau, Gornergrat is much better in terms of price, view, time of travelling and safe from pickpockets.

In summer, tourists may chose to trek from Gornergrat to Riffelberg, about 25-30 mins. While I was here in April, it's not a good time to do so. You may take a map from Tourist Center in Zermatt, in the case.

The ancestors of the St. Bernard share a history with the Sennenhunds, also called Swiss Mountain Dogs or Swiss Cattle Dogs, the large farm dogs of the farmers and dairymen of the livestock guardians, herding dogs, and draft dogs as well as hunting dogs, search and rescue dogs, and watchdogs. These dogs are thought to be descendants of molosser type dogs brought into the Alps by the ancient Romans, and the St. Bernard is recognized internationally today as one of the Molossoid breeds.

The earliest written records of the St. Bernard breed are from monks at the hospice at the Great St Bernard Pass in 1707, with paintings and drawings of the dog dating even earlier.

The most famous St. Bernard to save people at the pass was Barry (sometimes spelled Berry), who reportedly saved somewhere between 40 and 100 lives. There is a monument to Barry in the Cimetière des Chiens, and his body was preserved in the Natural History Museum in Berne.

The classic St. Bernard looked very different from the St. Bernard of today because of cross-breeding. Severe winters from 1816 to 1818 led to increased numbers of avalanches, killing many of the dogs used for breeding while they were performing rescues. In an attempt to preserve the breed, the remaining St. Bernards were crossed with Newfoundlands brought from the Colony of Newfoundland in the 1850s, and so lost much of their use as rescue dogs in the snowy climate of the alps because the long fur they inherited would freeze and weigh them down.

The Swiss St. Bernard Club was founded in Basel on March 15, 1884. The St. Bernard was the very first breed entered into the Swiss Stud Book in 1884, and the breed standard was finally approved in 1888. Since then, the breed has been a Swiss national dog.
