“Perched dramatically on a cliff 914 meters above Paro valley, Taktsang Monastery is a sacred pilgrimage site where Guru Padmasambhava meditated, introducing Buddhism to Bhutan.”

Taktsang Monastery, famously known as the Tiger’s Nest, is a sacred Buddhist monastery built around a cave clinging to a cliff 914 meters above the floor of Paro valley, Bhutan. According to legend, Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava), who is credited with bringing Buddhism to Bhutan in the 8th century, flew to this site on the back of a tigress and meditated in the cave.

The monastery complex was founded in 1692 by Gyalse Tenzin Rabgye, constructed around the cave where Guru Padmasambhava is said to have meditated for three years, three months, three weeks, three days, and three hours. The site remains one of thirteen sacred “tiger lair” caves in Bhutan, making it an important pilgrimage destination for locals and visitors worldwide.

The Paro valley celebrates the Tsechu festival annually in honor of Padmasambhava, typically held in March or April, drawing crowds for traditional dances, rituals, and festivities celebrating Bhutanese heritage and spirituality.

Taktsang Monastery is not only a religious and cultural treasure but also an architectural marvel due to its precarious location and integration with the natural cliffside environment. Visitors often remark on the breathtaking views and the profound sense of peace experienced during the ascent.

How to Get There

Taktsang Monastery can be reached by a scenic hike from the base of Paro valley. The trail takes approximately 2 to 3 hours uphill, offering stunning views of the monastery and the surrounding landscape. Horse rides are also available for parts of the trek.
