“A striking white-walled fortress with golden roofs, Tashichho Dzong is home to Bhutan’s central monastic body and government offices, offering visitors a glimpse of Bhutanese spirituality, culture, and architecture.”

Tashichho Dzong is the administrative and religious heart of Bhutan, located along the banks of the Wang Chhu River at the northern edge of Thimphu. It houses the offices of the King of Bhutan, the cabinet secretariat, and several government ministries, while also serving as the summer residence of the Je Khenpo, the chief abbot of Bhutan’s central monastic body. The dzong’s compound comprises over 100 rooms, divided between religious and administrative sections, and features a large central tower, courtyards, and assembly halls used for significant religious ceremonies.

The fortress showcases quintessential Bhutanese architecture with whitewashed walls, golden roofs, and elaborate woodwork. The interior includes the throne room and main assembly hall (the throne chamber), adorned with murals and textiles illustrating Vajrayana Buddhist teachings and the life of Guru Padmasambhava, revered as the founder of Buddhism in Bhutan. Only certain areas, including the main courtyard and designated rooms, are accessible to tourists, preserving the sanctity of the monastic and governmental spaces.

Tashichho Dzong also hosts major cultural events such as the Thimphu Tshechu festival, held annually in September or October, during which monks perform traditional masked dances and rituals. Visitors can admire the dzong’s grandeur, explore its courtyards, and observe the vibrant religious and administrative life of Bhutan in operation.

How to Get There

The dzong is approximately 2 km from Thimphu city center. Visitors can reach it on foot from downtown, by taxi, or via private car. The dzong is easily visible from the main riverbank and central streets of Thimphu.
