“A sacred fertility temple known for its unique rituals and historical connection to Drukpa Kunley, featuring symbols believed to drive away evil spirits and bring blessings.”

Chimi Lhakhang was built in 1499 by Lama Ngawang Choegyel in honor of Drukpa Kunley, the “Divine Madman,” who used the “Thunderbolt of Wisdom” to subdue a demon that had taken the form of a dog and buried it beneath the hill where the monastery stands. The name “Chimi” means “No Dog,” commemorating this event.

The temple is renowned worldwide as a “Fertility Temple.” Couples from around the globe visit to receive blessings believed to aid conception. The resident lama performs sacred rituals using wooden and ivory phallus symbols, said to be brought from Tibet by Drukpa Kunley, to tap the heads of visitors seeking fertility blessings.

In the nearby village of Sopsokha, phallus symbols are commonly painted or carved on the walls of houses. Bhutanese believe these symbols ward off evil spirits and bring prosperity to their homes.

How to Get There

Chimi Lhakhang is located on a rounded hill, symbolically compared to a woman’s womb. Visitors can reach the monastery by a 20-30 minute walk from the main road, passing through rice fields and the village. The path is scenic and popular among tourists.
