“Located at the confluence of the Mo and Po Rivers forming the Puna Tsang River, it is a fortress and monastery of exceptional historical and religious significance.”

Punakha Dzong is a fortress and monastery of both historical and religious importance in Bhutan. It sits at the confluence of the Mo (female) and Po (male) rivers, which together form the Puna Tsang River, giving the dzong a striking visual presence and symbolizing harmony between nature and community.

According to legend, Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava), believed by Bhutanese to be the “Second Buddha,” prophesied that a man named Namgyel would construct a fortress, or “dzong,” in front of the hill. This prophecy came true when Subdrung Ngawang Namgyel, the unifier of Bhutan’s secular and religious authority, established Punakha Dzong as his seat approximately 350 years ago, prior to building Tashichho Dzong in Thimphu.

Punakha Dzong is the most important dzong in Bhutan, serving as the repository for Subdrung Ngawang Namgyel’s relics and as the site where King Ugyen Wangchuck was crowned the first King of Bhutan on December 17, 1907. This date later became Bhutan’s National Day.

The fortress is also an architectural marvel, featuring intricately decorated temples and ceremonial halls. Visitors can admire the confluence of the two rivers, the dzong’s impressive structure, and gain insight into Bhutanese history, culture, and religious practices.
