Dochula Pass is located at an altitude of 3,146 meters on the route between Thimphu and Punakha. Its highlight is the “Druk Wangyal” cluster of 108 chortens, which are symbols of auspiciousness and peace for the land. They were built as an offering to the Bodhisattvas of the Vajrayana tradition, set against the stunning backdrop of the Himalayan peaks rising over 7,000 meters.
In-depth information about the monument:
The 108 chortens (Druk Wangyal Chortens) are arranged in three tiers: the lowest tier has 45 chortens, the middle tier 36, and the upper tier 27, surrounding a central main chorten.
History of construction:
They were constructed between 2004 and 2005 by Her Majesty Queen Ashi Dorji Wangmo to commemorate Bhutanese soldiers who sacrificed their lives in the 2003 conflict with Indian insurgents and to celebrate the victory of King Jigme Singye Wangchuck in driving out the rebels from Bhutanese territory.
Religious significance:
The number 108 is sacred in Vajrayana Buddhism, representing the removal of 108 defilements to achieve enlightenment. Each chorten was built according to strict religious rituals and contains sacred objects and prayers inside.
