“A significant archaeological site believed to be the location of Old Chumphon City, with discoveries of artifacts such as sandstone Buddha head fragments in the Srivijaya art style. The temple features a prang, registered as a national historic site, and houses the Ban Wat Pradeum Museum, which exhibits unearthed artifacts from the area.”

Wat Pradeum, also known as Wat Suthawastharam, is an ancient temple of great importance to history and archaeology in Chumphon Province. It is located in an area believed by archaeologists to have been the site of Old Chumphon City.

Inside the temple, several important archaeological findings have been discovered, including over 20 pieces of sandstone Buddha heads and stucco artifacts in the Srivijaya and Ayutthaya art styles, along with sandstone boundary stones (Bai Sema) and ancient chedi foundations, all registered as national historic sites.

The temple’s prang is a square-based, tall, spire-shaped structure with a surrounding gallery corridor (Rabeang Khot), believed to enshrine Buddha relics.

Stone pillars called Phra Khoi were found by locals, originally thought to be city boundary pillars, but later identified as eroded sandstone Buddha heads.

Within the temple grounds, the Ban Wat Pradeum Museum has been established in the monk’s residence (Kuti Luang Por Ves) to display artifacts, such as sandstone Bai Sema, Buddha fragments, and ceramic vessels.

Wat Pradeum also serves as a cultural center and religious activity site, hosting annual ceremonies and festivals such as chanting, merit-making, and other Buddhist rituals.

Visitors can learn about Old Chumphon City, Srivijaya art, and local architecture, and the temple serves as a starting point for exploring other archaeological sites in the province.
