“Wat Pradeum is an important archaeological site believed to be the location of the ancient Chumphon city. Archaeological artifacts have been discovered here, such as sandstone Buddha head fragments in the Srivijaya art style. Within the temple, there is a prang (tower) that has been registered as a national historic site, and the Ban Wat Pradeum Museum displays artifacts excavated from the area.”

Wat Pradeum, also known as Wat Sutthawastharam, is a historically and archaeologically significant temple in Chumphon. Archaeologists believe the site was once the location of old Chumphon City.

The temple grounds have yielded important archaeological findings, including nearly 20 sandstone and stucco Buddha heads, some with Srivijaya and Ayutthaya-style influences, sandstone boundary markers (Bai Sema), and foundations of ancient chedis and walls. These artifacts were registered as a national historical site by the Fine Arts Department.

The temple’s prang is square-based and tall, surrounded by a cloister, and is believed to enshrine relics of the Buddha.

A stone pillar called Phra Khoi was discovered here; originally thought to be a city pillar, it was later identified as an eroded sandstone Buddha.

The Ban Wat Pradeum Museum is located in the old monk’s residence (Kuti Luang Pho Weth Phuripanyo) and displays artifacts such as Bai Sema, Buddha fragments, and earthenware recovered from the Chumphon River.

The temple is also a cultural center hosting religious ceremonies, festivals, and community activities. Visitors can learn about the history of old Chumphon City, Srivijaya art, and local architectural traditions.
