“A sacred temple in Chumphon known for housing the incorrupt body of Luang Pu Song Jantasaro, a revered monk deeply respected by devotees nationwide.”

Wat Chao Fa Sala Loi is one of the most venerated temples in Chumphon Province, steeped in history and faith. The temple has long been a spiritual refuge for both locals and pilgrims seeking blessings and inner peace. Nestled amid lush greenery just a short distance from downtown Chumphon, it provides a calm, shaded sanctuary ideal for meditation and reflection.

The name “Chao Fa Sala Loi” originates from a local legend. It is said that the area once served as a resting place for royal family members traveling by boat, where a floating pavilion—or “Sala Loi”—was built to receive them. Over time, the area became known as Sala Loi, and when the temple was formally established, it was given the auspicious name Wat Chao Fa Sala Loi.

The temple’s renown stems primarily from its association with Luang Pu Song Jantasaro (1889–1983), one of Thailand’s most revered monks. Known for his strict discipline, humility, and compassion, Luang Pu Song was often referred to as the “Deity of Chumphon.” His teachings emphasized mindfulness, merit-making, and generosity—summed up in his famous phrase, “The more you give, the more you gain.”

Following his passing in 1983, an extraordinary event occurred—his body did not decay. Even after decades, his remains remain perfectly preserved and are enshrined in a glass coffin inside the main sermon hall, where devotees come daily to pay their respects and seek blessings.

Another remarkable tale surrounding the temple is the legend of the turtles. When Luang Pu Song passed away, countless turtles emerged from nearby ponds and climbed the temple’s steps toward his resting place as if to pay their respects. The phenomenon, witnessed by many locals, became an enduring symbol of the monk’s spiritual power and connection to nature. Today, the temple maintains a turtle pond as a living reminder of that miraculous event.

The temple grounds are serene and beautifully maintained, featuring large sala trees (Shorea robusta)—the same species under which the Buddha was born and later attained parinirvana. When in bloom, the trees produce striking pink-orange flowers with a soft fragrance, adding to the temple’s peaceful and sacred atmosphere.

Wat Chao Fa Sala Loi is also the spiritual center for many of Chumphon’s Buddhist activities. Annual events such as Luang Pu Song’s birthday commemoration, the Songkran water-pouring ceremony, and the Kathina and robe-offering festivals draw large crowds of devotees from across Thailand who come to make merit and pay homage.

Even today, visitors continue to come seeking blessings for health, success, and peace of mind. It is widely believed that those who visit the temple with sincere faith will receive Luang Pu Song’s benevolent protection and guidance.
