“A sacred temple in Chumphon known for housing the incorrupt body of Luang Pu Song Jantasaro, a revered monk deeply respected by devotees nationwide.”

Wat Chao Fa Sala Loi is one of the important temples of Chumphon Province. It has a long history and has long been connected to the way of life of the local community. The temple is located not far from Chumphon town, easily accessible, and surrounded by a peaceful atmosphere with large trees providing shade. It is suitable for making merit, practicing meditation, and finding peace away from the busyness of daily life.

The name “Chao Fa Sala Loi Temple” comes from a legend that the area once had a floating pavilion built to welcome royal ladies traveling along the waterway. Over time, people became familiar with calling it “Sala Loi” (Floating Pavilion). When the temple was officially established, the name “Wat Chao Fa Sala Loi” was chosen for auspiciousness.

The temple became widely known because of the highly respected monk Luang Pu Song Chantasaro (1889–1983), a meditation master renowned for his strict discipline and loving-kindness. He is honored as the “Deity of Chumphon,” believed to possess strong spiritual power and sacred speech. His disciples are found all across Thailand, especially those who follow the meditation tradition, who often travel to pay homage to him.

Luang Pu Song lived a simple and humble life, devoted entirely to the Dhamma. His famous teaching, “The more you give, the more you receive,” reflects his principles of generosity and compassion.

After Luang Pu Song passed away in 1983, a miraculous event occurred: his body did not decompose. Even after many decades, his remains have remained preserved and intact. They are enshrined in a glass coffin inside the sermon hall, allowing disciples and devotees to come and pay respect to this day.

One of the most talked-about events is the story of the “Temple Turtles.” After his passing, hundreds or even thousands of turtles emerged from the pond and climbed the temple steps toward the sermon hall, as though paying homage to his remains. Many people witnessed the event. Since then, turtles have been considered sacred animals connected to Luang Pu Song. Today, the temple has a turtle pond as a symbol of his compassion and spiritual presence.

The temple grounds are filled with lush nature, including a large sala tree, an important symbol in Buddhist history. It is believed that the Buddha was born and attained Parinirvana under sala trees. The sala blossoms here bloom in shades of pinkish-orange, with large petals and a gentle fragrance, creating a sacred and serene atmosphere.

Wat Chao Fa Sala Loi is also a center for religious activities in Chumphon, such as the annual celebration of Luang Pu Song’s birthday, ceremonies to bathe his remains during festivals, and Kathin or Pha Pa ceremonies that attract devotees from across the country.

Today, the temple continues to be a place where people come to pray for health, work success, and peace of mind. It is believed that those who come with pure faith will receive blessings and loving-kindness from Luang Pu Song.
