“The museum features diverse exhibits ranging from prehistoric artifacts and the Khao Sam Kaew ancient community to major historical events such as Typhoon Gay and the life story of Prince of Chumphon, the revered “Father of the Royal Thai Navy.””

The Chumphon National Museum was established under the Fine Arts Department’s project to create national museums in every province as centers of historical and cultural learning. It was founded through cooperation between the Fine Arts Department and Chumphon Province, which allocated a 7-rai area at Khao Sam Kaew, Na Cha-ang Subdistrict, Mueang District, in 1994.

Construction began in fiscal years 1996–1997 with a budget exceeding 50 million baht. The museum officially opened on April 30, 1999, and was graciously inaugurated by Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.

The two-story museum building was designed by architect Udom Sakulpanich, blending traditional southern Thai elements with modern architecture. Its elegant yet simple structure reflects Chumphon’s regional identity and harmony with its natural surroundings.

Inside, the museum features eight main exhibition sections:

  • Natural Environment and Geography of Chumphon: showcasing the province’s physical geography, ecosystems, and natural resources.

  • Prehistoric Archaeology: displaying prehistoric tools, pottery, and ancient ornaments that tell the story of early human settlements.

  • Khao Sam Kaew Ancient Community: presenting artifacts such as beads, bronze bracelets, and trade relics from one of Chumphon’s most significant archaeological sites.

  • Chumphon in Maritime Trade Routes: highlighting the province’s historical role as a port and trading hub in the Gulf of Thailand.

  • Biography of Prince of Chumphon: honoring Admiral Prince Abhakara Kiartivongse and his royal contributions to the Thai Navy and the local community.

  • Typhoon Gay: documenting the catastrophic 1989 typhoon that severely affected Chumphon, with photographs and detailed historical accounts.

  • World War II and the Youth Soldiers’ Heroism: depicting important wartime events and local acts of bravery.

  • Local Culture and Folk Wisdom: exhibiting cultural artifacts, local crafts, and traditional ways of life that reflect Chumphon’s heritage.

Modern exhibition techniques are used throughout, including light, sound, and multimedia displays, allowing visitors to experience history in an engaging and interactive way. The museum is often referred to as “The Living Room of Chumphon,” warmly welcoming visitors to explore the province’s proud past and cultural legacy.
