“Legendary black eggs, boiled in the volcanic waters, and believed to bestow the gift of seven extra years of life ”
Owakudani
Owakudani is a volcanic valley in Japan that was formed by a volcanic eruption more than 3,000 years ago. It is known for its active sulfur vents and hot springs, making it a popular tourist destination in Hakone. The area offers breathtaking scenic views, and on clear days, visitors can even catch a glimpse of the majestic Mount Fuji. However, please note that due to the presence of volcanic gases, the area may sometimes be closed for safety reasons, so it's advisable to check its status before planning a visit.
Located about a 10-minute walk from the ropeway station, the main volcanic zone of Owakudani features steam vents and bubbling pools. Here, visitors can purchase hard-boiled eggs that have been cooked in the hot waters of the volcanic area. These eggs have blackened shells as a result of a chemical reaction with the hot spring water. According to local belief, consuming these eggs can extend one's life by seven years. It's important to note that while the shells may be blackened, the inside of the eggs remains a normal boiled consistency.
