“Ride a scenic cable car to over 4,500 meters, explore the glacier park, and watch the epic Impression Lijiang show framed by snow peaks.”

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, or "玉龙雪山," is an awe-inspiring mountain range located northwest of the Old Town of Lijiang in Yunnan Province, China. Its highest peak, Shanzidou (扇子陡峰), towers at 5,596 meters and is snow-covered year-round, making it one of the most accessible snow-capped mountains in China.

The mountain is famed for its glacial terrain, towering cliffs, deep gorges, and beautiful meadows associated with the indigenous Naxi culture. From afar, the snowy ridges resemble a white dragon soaring across the sky—hence the poetic name “Jade Dragon.” The mountain’s white silhouette against the blue horizon is so striking that it’s often called one of China’s most beautiful natural sights, especially when viewed from Heilongtan Park (Black Dragon Pool) in Lijiang.

Popular activities include taking a cable car to the Glacier Park at around 4,500 meters, walking along the high-altitude wooden walkways, enjoying panoramic viewpoints, and attending the Impression Lijiang open-air performance—an epic cultural show directed by Zhang Yimou that uses the mountain itself as a natural backdrop.

How to Get There

Fly into Lijiang Sanyi International Airport, then take a taxi or shuttle bus for about 40 minutes to the scenic area’s entrance. There are three major cable car routes: the Glacier Park, Spruce Meadow, and Yak Meadow, each offering different levels of altitude and scenery.

Travel Tips
  • Best time to visit: From March to October, when the weather is stable, skies are clearer, and temperatures are more pleasant. Spring brings blooming flowers alongside snow, while autumn offers golden alpine meadows and crisp air.
  • Least recommended period: From November to February, due to possible fog, strong winds, and low visibility. Still, for those seeking a snowy, authentic alpine atmosphere, winter can be magical — just be well-prepared.
  • Bring warm clothing even in summer: temperatures at the summit can drop below 5°C
  • Walk slowly and stay hydrated to prevent altitude sickness
  • Go early in the morning for clearer views and fewer crowds

Admission Fee:

  • Combined entrance and cable car ticket: approximately 300–400 RMB, depending on the route chosen

The best time to visit is March to October when the skies are clearer, and temperatures are more moderate. Winter (November–February) offers heavy snowfall and a more intense alpine atmosphere, ideal for those seeking a true snow experience.
