“The white grand stupa encircled by elephants enshrining 109 Buddha relics, the ornate three-headed Makara-Naga staircase, and the legend of Phaya Thaen Luang on Doi Den Nang Fa, serving as the spiritual heart of the Tai Lue community of Ban Thin.”

Wat Phra That Thin Thaen Luang is located on Doi Den Nang Fa, a sacred mountain revered by the local Tai Lue community. At the heart of the temple stands a large grand stupa enshrining 109 Buddha relics, consisting of ancient relics and those ceremonially bestowed by the Supreme Patriarch of Thailand. Within the temple grounds are the Royal Assembly Hall housing one thousand Buddha images, a Vipassana meditation hall, a three-story building, and various monastic structures, making the temple a major spiritual center for Buddhists in the area.

In 1999 (B.E. 2542), the temple was officially granted temple status in celebration of the auspicious 72nd birthday anniversary of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great. The construction project was presided over by Phra Khru Wichit Thammabhon, with architectural design by Mr. Witthaya Suriya, National Artist in Architecture.

The Legend of Phaya Chiang and Doi Den Nang Fa: Around B.E. 1700, Phaya Chiang, a Tai Lue king of the Sipsong Panna Kingdom, traveled south to Phrae to conduct a grand elephant-capturing ceremony involving thousands of auspicious wild elephants at Doi Den Nang Fa. The area was rich in natural resources and strategically significant, leading to strong diplomatic ties between the Tai Lue royal lineage and Phrae.

The heroic deeds of Phaya Chiang and his elephant army are recorded in Lanna and Lan Xang palm-leaf manuscripts and are also depicted in stone carvings at Angkor Wat in Cambodia, famously known as “The Elephant Army of the Siamese King.”

Historical Role of Phrae City: During the Ayutthaya, Thonburi, and early Rattanakosin periods, Phrae played an important role in national defense. In particular, Phaya Mueang Chai, a hero of three kingdoms, unified various Thai ethnic groups and contributed significantly to driving Burmese forces out of Lanna.

After peace was restored in B.E. 2339 (1796), several Thai ethnic groups, including the Tai Lue, migrated to Phrae. They performed rituals honoring Phaya Thaen Luang at Doi Den Nang Fa to bring prosperity and blessings to their new settlements. Since then, Wat Phra That Thin Thaen Luang has remained the spiritual center of faith for the Tai Lue community of Ban Thin.

The Legend of the Buddha Relics and Prophecy: According to legend, the Buddha foretold the sanctity of this location during His journey through the Lanna region. Over time, Buddha relics from different historical periods were enshrined here, including relics associated with the prophecy of Phaya Thaen Luang, the celestial guardian of the relics. This belief gave rise to the name Doi Den Nang Fa, making the site a revered destination for spiritual seekers and those in search of inner peace.
