“Over 500-year-old submerged temple in Kwan Phayao with the world’s only candlelight procession on water”
Wat Tilok Aram, locally known as San That Klang Nam and San That Buak Si Jaeng, was constructed during the reign of King Tilokarat, the ninth monarch of the Mangrai dynasty. Phaya Yutthisathira, the governor of Phayao at the time, built it around 1476–1486 (B.E. 2019–2029) to honor King Tilokarat.
Submerged history and sacred objects
-
Originally located in the Buak Si Jaeng area, the temple and nearby community were submerged for over 68 years after the Department of Fisheries built a dam in 1939–1941 (B.E. 2482–2484), creating Kwan Phayao.
-
In 2007 (B.E. 2550), a stone inscription in the ancient Tai Tham script was discovered, confirming that Phaya Yutthisathira built the temple and linking the history of Phayao with Lanna and Sukhothai.
-
Luang Pho Sila, a sandstone Buddha in the Maravichai posture combining Chiang Saen and Sukhothai styles, was enshrined on a floating altar in the middle of the water.
