“Scenic walkway along Vajiralongkorn Dam reservoir with mountain views. Features a newly reinforced structure and stands as Thong Pha Phum’s premier sunset photography landmark.”
Suan Chaloem Phra Kiat Rama 9, located near the Vajiralongkorn Dam, is a significant recreational area and viewpoint in Thong Pha Phum District, Kanchanaburi Province. Situated within the grounds of the Vajiralongkorn Dam formerly known as "Khao Laem Dam", Thailand's first rockfill dam with a concrete core, it was built to block the Khwae Noi River for electricity generation and water management in the Mae Klong River basin. Construction began in 1977 and was completed in 1984. It was later renamed "Vajiralongkorn Dam" in 2001. The surrounding area has been developed as a combination of energy resource, tourist attraction, and recreational space for the public.
The park's design blends seamlessly with the landscape of Thong Pha Phum, surrounded by the Tenasserim Mountains and the vast western forests. This creates a tranquil atmosphere with cool, comfortable air and unique scenery unlike typical public parks. A highlight is the scenic walkway along the reservoir, offering visitors breathtaking views of the large reservoir surrounded by a complex network of mountains. Especially during the morning and evening, the sunlight reflecting off the water's surface creates a particularly beautiful atmosphere, making it a popular spot for photography, relaxation, and watching the sunset for tourists visiting Thong Pha Phum.
The park's landscape is well-maintained, with lawns, gardens, flowering plants, and seating areas scattered along the walkways, making it ideal for strolling, exercising, and relaxing with family. During certain times of the year, especially in winter, the surrounding area experiences cool weather and a light fog in the mornings, enhancing the scenic views of the reservoir and surrounding mountains. Furthermore, the area is connected to important natural attractions in Thong Pha Phum district, such as Thong Pha Phum National Park, Jokkradin Waterfall, and various viewpoints, making it a popular stop for tourists traveling to natural attractions in the mountainous regions of Kanchanaburi.
Beyond its tourism value, the Vajiralongkorn Dam area is also vital to Thailand's economy and water resource management. The dam stores a vast amount of water, supporting hydroelectric power generation, agriculture, consumption, and mitigating flooding and saltwater intrusion in the lower Mae Klong River basin. The reservoir area is also an important freshwater fishing ground for nearby communities. Therefore, a visit to the King Rama IX Commemorative Park is more than just enjoying natural scenery. But it is also an opportunity to experience the role of the Vajiralongkorn Dam in the lifestyle and development of the western region of Thailand.
Currently, the King Rama IX Park is considered one of the important landmarks of Thong Pha Phum that tourists often visit before continuing on to Sangkhlaburi or Pilok. Its convenient location, not far from the district, and its open atmosphere by the reservoir make it ideal for a stopover or for enjoying the view in a relaxed manner. Especially during the winter months when Thong Pha Phum is popular with tourists seeking the cool weather and natural beauty of upper Kanchanaburi, this park clearly reflects the unique character of Thong Pha Phum, in terms of nature, scenery, and the importance of the Vajiralongkorn Dam to the surrounding area.
