“Discover 35-million-year-old "Siamopithecus" fossils, saber-toothed cats, and massive petrified trees at this world-class geological learning site located within Krabi Power Plant.”

Fossil Exhibition Center, located within the grounds of the Krabi Power Plant (EGAT), serves as a vital repository for invaluable natural heritage discovered during past lignite mining operations. Geological data indicates that this area was once a massive freshwater sedimentary basin during the Tertiary period. Approximately 35 to 40 million years ago, the environment was a lush, tropical rainforest and swamp, leading to the accumulation of diverse biological remains beneath layers of soil and coal. Today, it is recognized as one of the most complete and significant mammalian fossil sites in Southeast Asia.

The most internationally acclaimed highlight is the discovery of the jaw fragments and teeth of "Siamopithecus eocaenus", commonly known as the "Siam Primate." Belonging to the superfamily Anthropoidea, this find was a major turning point in global paleontology. It provided compelling evidence that the evolution of monkeys and apes—and subsequently human ancestors—may have originated in Asia rather than being confined solely to Africa, as previously theorized. The exhibition features life-sized models and systematic displays to explain this evolutionary timeline in an accessible and scientific manner.

Beyond the Siam Primate, the center showcases a rare collection of other mammalian fossils, including the Krabi Ginidictis a unique prehistoric carnivore often referred to as a "Saber-Toothed Cat" relative and the jaw remains of Anthracotheres, which were pig-like animals related to hippopotamuses. Visitors can also examine fossils of ancient crocodiles, freshwater turtles, and various fish species. Furthermore, the exhibition includes an impressive display of "Large Petrified Wood", preserving intricate wood grain patterns that allow visitors to visualize the entire prehistoric ecosystem that once flourished in Southern Thailand millions of years ago.

How to Get There
