“A submerged reef known as the Andaman’s coral forest, featuring dense staghorn corals and crystal-clear waters filled with tropical fish—truly Phi Phi’s premier snorkeling paradise.”
Hin Klang, often referred to as the great stone, is a hidden aquatic gem situated approximately 2 kilometers north of Koh Phi Phi Don within the boundaries of Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park. Geologically, Hin Klang is unique because it is not an island with a beach, but rather a massive submerged pinnacle or "underwater mountain." The reef structure is elongated, stretching roughly 110 meters from north to south and 55 meters in width_. At its shallowest point, the crest of the reef lies just a few feet below the surface, and during exceptionally low tides, the jagged rocks nearly break the water's line. This creates a specialized environment that serves as one of Krabi’s most vital marine nurseries and biodiverse habitats.
The underwater ecosystem at Hin Klang is famously dubbed the "Coral Forest" due to its incredible density and variety of marine life. The primary attraction is the vast, sprawling fields of Staghorn Coral (Acropora) that cover the rocky substrate like a dense thicket, interspersed with Porites (hump corals), brain corals, and vibrant soft corals that sway with the currents. This rich coral architecture provides shelter and food for a staggering array of reef fish, including Moorish idols, sergeant majors, parrotfish, and anemonefish living among stinging sea anemones. On clear days, sunlight penetrates the crystal-clear water, illuminating the reef in a world-class display of natural beauty that rivals the experience of scuba diving, making it widely considered the best snorkeling site in the Phi Phi archipelago.
Because Hin Klang is positioned in the open sea between Bamboo Island and Koh Phi Phi Don, the area is subject to significant tidal currents. These currents are essential to the reef's health, as they deliver the vital nutrients required for coral polyps to thrive; however, they also require snorkelers to exercise caution. It is highly recommended to wear a life jacket and stay close to the boat or guide at all times. Visiting Hin Klang offers more than just a scenic view—it provides a profound look at the resilience and majesty of nature, showcasing a flourishing underwater wilderness that remains one of the most pristine ecological treasures in the Andaman Sea.
