“The Prince of Chumphon Shrine Khet Udomsak is an important seaside memorial in Chumphon, consisting of the Krom Luang Chumphon Shrine and a replica of the Chumphon warship, facing the sea majestically.”
The Phra Tamnak and Krom Luang Chumphon Khrat Udomsak Shrine is the most important landmark of Chumphon Province. It is located at Hat Sai Ri, surrounded by a serene and beautiful seaside atmosphere. This shrine was built to commemorate “Sadej Tia” — Admiral Prince of the Royal Family, Krom Luang Chumphon Khrat Udomsak, the father of the Royal Thai Navy, who had great benevolence towards the navy and the nation.
He passed away from influenza at Hat Sai Ri on May 19, 1923 (B.E. 2466). Therefore, the Phra Tamnak and the shrine were constructed at this location as a place of worship and gratitude to him.
Inside the area, there are both the old and new Krom Luang Chumphon Shrines, situated on a hill with a clear view of the sea. Additionally, there is the Chumphon warship, formerly the HTMS Phra Ruang, an important torpedo warship commanded by him during his service in the navy. The HTMS Phra Ruang played a significant role in Thai maritime history in training personnel, patrolling, and protecting Thai waters.
After decommissioning, the ship was placed on the hill facing the sea as a memorial, symbolizing the courage and loyalty of the prince to the nation.
Nearby, there is also the Luang Pu Suk Shrine, a revered monk of Krom Luang Chumphon, for people to pay respects and pray. There is also a wide courtyard where visitors can set off firecrackers to pray for success in work, safe travels, and a stable life.
Popular offerings include 9 or 19 incense sticks, jasmine garlands, rice noodles with chili sauce, and steamed pumpkin custard.
Prohibited: Do not offer food containing pork or beef.
This area is also one of the most beautiful viewpoints in Chumphon Province, especially at sunset when the sun sets into the sea, reflecting on the majestic HTMS Phra Ruang, creating a powerful and stunning image.
