“This landmark features the shrine of the Prince of Chumphon and the decommissioned warship HTMS Chumphon, both facing the sea as symbols of honor and remembrance.”

The Prince of Chumphon Shrine (Phra Tamnak Krom Luang Chumphon Khet Udomsak) is one of the most significant landmarks in Chumphon Province. Located at Hat Sai Ree Beach, this memorial stands as a symbol of deep reverence for Admiral Prince Abhakara Kiartivongse, widely known as “Sadet Tia,” the Father of the Royal Thai Navy.

The shrine was established to commemorate the Prince, who passed away from influenza at Hat Sai Ree on May 19, 1923. His contributions to modernizing the Thai Navy and his devotion to the nation have made him a beloved and respected figure throughout Thailand.

The complex includes both the old and new shrines, built atop a small hill overlooking the shimmering blue sea. The most striking feature is the HTMS Chumphon, a decommissioned torpedo ship that was originally named HTMS Phra Ruang — the very vessel the Prince once commanded during his naval service.

HTMS Phra Ruang played a vital role in Thai maritime history as one of the Navy’s most important training and patrol ships in the early 20th century. After her retirement, the vessel was brought ashore and permanently installed facing the Gulf of Thailand as a monument to courage, patriotism, and royal legacy. Today, she stands majestically beside the shrine, offering visitors a glimpse into Thailand’s proud naval heritage.

Behind the main shrine is the Luang Pu Suk Shrine, dedicated to the revered monk whom the Prince deeply respected. Many visitors pay their respects at both sites, believing that blessings received here bring good fortune, success in work, and safe journeys.

Popular offerings to the Prince include 9 or 19 incense sticks, jasmine garlands, rice noodles with chili paste, and steamed pumpkin custard (Sangkhaya Fak Thong).
Note: Pork and beef offerings are traditionally avoided.

The entire area offers a tranquil atmosphere with beautiful seaside scenery. At sunset, the silhouette of the HTMS Phra Ruang standing against the glowing horizon creates one of the most breathtaking and symbolic views in Chumphon — a true blend of faith, history, and natural beauty.
