“Ban Wai Luem, Roi Et, is a renowned cultural destination famous for silk weaving, local handicrafts, and the traditional Isan community way of life.”

Ban Wai Luem is regarded as one of the most famous silk-weaving communities in Roi Et Province and an important center of traditional silk handicrafts in northeastern Thailand. The village is especially renowned for its “Mudmee silk,” which beautifully reflects local wisdom and the traditional Isan way of life. Located in Maba Subdistrict, Thung Khao Luang District, along Highway No. 23 between Roi Et and Yasothon, Ban Wai Luem has become a popular stop for travelers seeking authentic local souvenirs and cultural experiences.Originally, the villagers mainly worked in agriculture, but mulberry growing, silkworm raising, and silk weaving had long been practiced within households. As the village’s silk products gained popularity for their fine craftsmanship and quality, local residents formed weaving groups and established an OTOP product center to generate additional income while preserving their cultural heritage.

The unique identity of Ban Wai Luem silk lies in the traditional “Mudmee” technique, where silk threads are carefully tied and dyed before weaving to create intricate patterns. The resulting fabrics feature remarkable depth and detail. Popular motifs are inspired by nature, local beliefs, and Isan traditions, including naga patterns, floral motifs, and geometric designs. Depending on the complexity of the pattern, each piece may take days or even weeks to complete.Another highlight is the use of natural and locally sourced dyes, giving the silk warm tones and distinctive character. Some colors are extracted from tree bark, lac resin, and local plants, reflecting the community’s sustainable use of natural resources and traditional knowledge.Inside the Ban Wai Luem Silk Center, visitors can find much more than traditional silk fabrics. The community has expanded its products into modern fashion and lifestyle items such as clothing, scarves, neckties, handbags, pillowcases, and home decorations. The center also features other OTOP products from nearby communities, including basketry, cotton textiles, and processed local foods.

What makes Ban Wai Luem different from ordinary silk markets is its atmosphere as a “living community.” Visitors can interact directly with local weavers and learn about the authentic silk-making process, from silk reeling and dyeing to pattern tying and weaving on traditional wooden looms. This hands-on cultural experience offers a deeper appreciation of the patience, skill, and artistry involved in producing each silk fabric.During important festivals in Roi Et Province and OTOP events, the village often hosts silk-weaving demonstrations, exhibitions, and special product fairs. As a result, Ban Wai Luem has become not only a cultural tourism destination but also a significant community-based economic center that continues to preserve and promote the rich heritage of Isan silk weaving.
