“A popular recreational landmark by the Thawatchai Reservoir, well known for its beautiful waterfront scenery, fresh air, and as a favorite spot for exercise and sunset viewing in Roi Et Province”

Laem Phayom is located within the Thawatchai Reservoir Wildlife Sanctuary in Thawat Buri District, Roi Et Province. It is one of the province’s most important natural attractions and recreational destinations. The area features a narrow peninsula extending into the middle of the large reservoir, offering wide panoramic views of the water. Surrounded by peaceful scenery, shady trees, and abundant nature, it has become a popular getaway for both local residents and tourists seeking a relaxing atmosphere close to nature.Originally, the area was developed as a reservoir for irrigation and as a major water source for nearby communities. Due to the richness of its ecosystem, including open forests, wetlands, and diverse aquatic life, the surrounding area was later declared a wildlife non-hunting zone to help preserve the natural environment and provide a habitat for water birds and local wildlife species. The name “Laem Phayom” comes from the Phayom tree, a native tree species commonly found throughout the area. During the cool season and early summer, the trees bloom with small creamy-white flowers that produce a gentle fragrance, becoming one of the unique highlights of the destination.

Today, Laem Phayom has been developed into a public park and eco-tourism attraction that combines nature with health and recreational activities. The site includes lakeside walking paths, jogging tracks, cycling lanes, resting areas, viewing pavilions, and open activity grounds. It has become a favorite gathering place for local people, especially in the evenings when visitors come to jog, cycle, relax, and enjoy the sunset views.

One of the most remarkable features of Laem Phayom is its beautiful sunset scenery. Because the peninsula extends out into the reservoir, visitors can clearly see the sunlight reflecting across the water surface. The best time to visit is between 5:30 PM and 6:30 PM, when the atmosphere is at its most picturesque and ideal for photography and relaxation. During the cool season, thin layers of mist sometimes appear above the water in the early morning, adding even more charm to the landscape. The reservoir area is also home to many species of water birds and migratory birds, including egrets, ducks, and cormorants, making it an excellent spot for birdwatching and nature photography. Freshwater fish and aquatic plants further contribute to the ecological richness of the area.

Popular activities at Laem Phayom include cycling around the reservoir, jogging, picnicking by the water, taking landscape photographs, birdwatching, and relaxing with family and friends. At certain times of the year, the area also hosts tourism events, running competitions, music festivals, and camping activities organized by the province.Facilities within the area are well developed and include parking areas, restrooms, community shops, resting shelters, and outdoor activity spaces. Although the site has been improved for tourism, it still retains its peaceful natural atmosphere, making it an ideal destination for visitors who want to escape the busy city environment and enjoy the beauty of nature near Roi Et throughout the year.
