“Ancient Isan sim from the 24th Buddhist century with Thai–Lao inscriptions, featuring a peaceful, shady temple atmosphere and a traditional community lifestyle.”

Wat Prasittichaiyaram is a Buddhist temple under the Maha Nikaya monastic order. It was established around 1845 during the reign of King Rama III. It is considered one of the oldest temples in Ban Nong So community, Lam Pao Subdistrict, Mueang Kalasin District, Kalasin Province. The temple has long played an important role both as a religious site and as a community center. This area is part of the Lam Pao river basin, where human settlement has continued for generations. Therefore, the temple is not only a place for religious activities but also an important historical record reflecting the development of Isan communities in the early Rattanakosin period.

The most significant feature of the temple is the “sim” (ordination hall), which is an early example of traditional Isan vernacular architecture that remains relatively well preserved. The building is modest in size and emphasizes simplicity in accordance with the practical needs of the local community in the past. The sim is constructed using local materials such as wood and a mixture of cement based on traditional craftsmanship. This reflects the limited resources of the period, yet it was transformed into a unique architectural form with its own identity.

The walls of the sim are thick with relatively few openings, helping to keep the interior cool and calm, suitable for religious ceremonies. The roof is simple and tiered, not elaborately decorated like royal architecture, but instead reflects Isan folk artistic concepts that emphasize stability, faith, and functional use in harmony with local lifestyles.
