“Sacred Chaiyaphruek City Pillar, beautiful golden teak four-gabled Thai architecture, and a spiritual center in the heart of the city, conveniently located near street art attractions.”

Kalasin City Pillar Shrine is the spiritual center of the city, reflecting the origins, history, and beliefs of the people of Kalasin. It is closely tied to the founding of the city around 1793 (B.E. 2336) during the reign of Thao Somphamit, the first governor. Originally, it was a simple wooden pavilion used to enshrine the city pillar and conduct important ceremonial rituals. Over time, it deteriorated and was extensively restored in 1973 (B.E. 2516), becoming the magnificent four-gabled Thai-style pavilion seen today.

The building is constructed entirely of golden teak wood and stands out for its hybrid architectural style, blending Isan craftsmanship with royal Thai influences. Its layered roof design symbolizes Mount Meru in traditional cosmology. The finely carved wooden details on the pillars and beams demonstrate highly skilled local craftsmanship, creating an atmosphere that feels peaceful, sacred, and deeply spiritual. At the center of the shrine is the sacred Chaiyaphruek city pillar, believed by locals to be the spiritual core of the city. It represents prosperity and victory and is also thought to protect the city while bringing stability to life, work, and family. Inside the shrine, there are also Buddha images and a statue of Thao Somphamit for worship and blessings.

The shrine also serves as an important cultural hub, especially during the Songkran Festival, when grand ceremonies and traditional Isan dance offerings are performed by participants from across the province. This event highlights the strong cultural identity of the region. The surrounding area connects to Kalasin’s old town district, featuring street art that depicts local lifestyles, dinosaurs (a provincial symbol), and traditional Isan culture. This makes the area both a spiritual destination and a contemporary cultural and art space.

Today, the Kalasin City Pillar Shrine is not only a sacred site but also a key city landmark, a center of community faith, and a starting point for exploring downtown Kalasin.
